Industry glossary

Terms you will meet in the documents, systems and scenarios.

Par level

The amount of an item the cafe needs on hand to start the week, used to work out how much to order.

Float

The set amount of coins and small notes put in the register at the start of the day so change can be given.

Food safety supervisor

The trained person a food business must have who knows how to keep food safe and can direct others.

Use-by date

The date after which food must not be sold or eaten because it is unsafe.

Hazard

Anything that could hurt someone, such as a wet floor, a sharp edge or a bag that might contain glass.

Near miss

Something that nearly hurt someone but did not, which must still be reported so it can be fixed.

Assembly point

The safe place everyone goes to in an emergency so the warden can check that everyone is out.

Action item

A job agreed at a meeting with one person's name and a due date, tracked on the Task Board.

Individual learning plan

A learner's own record of what they want to be able to do, the help they need and the steps they will take.

Work placement

Time spent doing real work tasks in a workplace, at the hub or with an employer, as part of a course.
